Immigration officer reported dead, another critically injured in dynamite explosion at Hamile

An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has died, while a colleague is battling for his life following an explosion involving a motor tricycle reportedly carrying suspected dynamite at Hamile in the Upper West Region.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 3, along an unauthorised route in the border community, raising concerns about the movement of potentially explosive materials through unapproved routes.

Accra-based Citi News reported that security sources in Hamile suggests that the explosion also killed the civilians transporting the suspected explosives on the tricycle.

The civilians were reportedly being pursued by security personnel after allegedly ignoring instructions to stop at a checkpoint.

Initial accounts indicate that the tricycle was travelling along an unapproved route when security officers attempted to intercept it. The occupants allegedly failed to comply, leading to a pursuit that ended in the explosion.

The blast reportedly struck the pursuing officers, killing one Immigration Service personnel and leaving another critically injured.

The surviving officer is said to be in a serious condition. However, details about the nature of the injuries and where the officer is receiving medical attention remain unclear.

Hamile is a border community in the Upper West Region, close to Ghana’s boundary with Burkina Faso.

Security agencies in the area conduct surveillance and patrols to check unauthorised movements and address cross-border security threats.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the security risks associated with the transportation of potentially dangerous materials through unofficial routes, particularly in border communities.
