TRAFFITECH Rollout: MTTD Moves to Engage Transport Unions Over Trading Ban

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has announced plans to engage transport unions over the enforcement of restrictions on trading at bus stops and pedestrian walkways under the TRAFFITECH system.

ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director of Education, Research and Training at the MTTD, said the authorities were ready to work with transport operators and their unions to address concerns surrounding the implementation of the new traffic regulations.

His comments come amid growing concerns among transport operators and traders about measures intended to prevent commercial activities at designated bus stops and pedestrian walkways.

The TRAFFITECH system, introduced to strengthen traffic law enforcement through technology, has generated discussions within the transport sector over how stricter monitoring could affect daily business activities.

ACP Obeng stressed that stakeholder cooperation would be important in ensuring the enforcement exercise achieves its objectives without creating unnecessary disagreements between authorities and transport operators.

“We will collaborate with the transport unions to address their concerns regarding the prohibition of trading at bus stops and on pedestrian walkways,” he indicated.

The proposed engagement is expected to give transport unions an opportunity to present their challenges and contribute to discussions on the practical implementation of the regulations.

The restrictions form part of broader efforts to improve road safety, reduce congestion and ensure that public spaces are used appropriately. Trading at bus stops and along pedestrian walkways can obstruct passengers, pedestrians and vehicles, creating difficulties for road users.

The MTTD’s willingness to engage transport unions signals an effort to combine strict enforcement with consultation as TRAFFITECH implementation progresses.

Attention will now turn to the outcome of the discussions and whether they will produce arrangements that address the concerns of transport operators and traders while maintaining traffic discipline.

The overall objective is to improve road safety, ease congestion and ensure safer movement for pedestrians and motorists across Ghana.
