SAWS forecasts showers, thunderstorms across SA

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is forecasting a 30 to 60 percent chance of showers and thundershowers across several parts of the country on Tuesday, particularly over the northern interior.

The affected areas include North-West, the Free State, northern parts of the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and Limpopo.

Residents are urged to keep umbrellas and raincoats handy, while ensuring that they and their animals seek safe shelter when thunderstorms and lightning occur.

SABC Meteorologist Azwi Tuwani says, “In terms of rainfall, we have a 30 to 60% chance of showers going into thunderstorms. This is situated over the northern parts of South Africa, mainly sitting overnight. North West, Free State, far northern parts of Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and Limpopo for today.”

“So, people need to have their umbrellas and raincoats close by, but then again, whenever you hear thunder, just make sure that you are in a safe space. When it comes to lightning, just make sure that your animals are also in a safe space.”
