Sparks Fly – Anneline Kriel Reacts To Criticism – Renews Debate With Mngxitama Over Post
Former Miss World Anneline Kriel has expressed shock and sadness following the brutal attack on North West farmer Donovan Marx, describing his ordeal as an example of the cruel suffering that continues to affect South Africa’s farming communities.
Kriel, who has campaigned against farm attacks for several years, reacted after reports emerged about the horrific assault on the 50-year-old farmer in Ventersdorp, North West. The incident reportedly involved extreme violence, leaving Marx with severe injuries after his earlobes were allegedly severed and he was shot, stabbed and brutally assaulted.
Five suspects, aged between 26 and 56, have reportedly been arrested in connection with the attack as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue.
Reacting to the disturbing reports, Kriel expressed disappointment that attacks on farmers remain a serious concern despite years of public campaigns and calls for stronger rural security measures.
The former beauty queen, who has been an outspoken advocate for farm safety since at least 2017, lamented that little appears to have changed since she began raising awareness about violence against farming families.
“Nothing has changed,” Kriel remarked, expressing her frustration over the continued reports of brutal attacks in rural communities.
Her reaction also attracted attention after she shared a controversial social media post by MK Party Member of Parliament Andile Mngxitama concerning the attack. The move revived public tensions between the two figures, who have previously clashed over issues that have attracted national attention.
The latest incident has once again placed farm safety at the centre of South Africa’s public debate, with growing calls for improved rural policing, effective investigations and stronger protection for farming communities.
While farm attacks remain politically contentious, Kriel’s comments highlight the fear and uncertainty experienced by families living and working in isolated rural areas.
As investigations into Marx’s attack continue, the incident has renewed questions about the effectiveness of existing security measures and whether enough is being done to protect farmers and rural residents from violent crime.
