We Have a 2002 Moment and Will Field One Presidential Candidate – Rigathi Gachagua

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hinted at a possible opposition strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election after holding a meeting with veteran politician Charity Ngilu at his Wamunyoro residence.

In a statement shared after the meeting, Gachagua described Ngilu as the Iron Lady of Kenyan politics and praised her contribution to the formation of the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), which defeated KANU in the historic 2002 General Election.

According to Gachagua, Ngilu played an important role in developing the political strategy that brought together influential leaders, including the late President Mwai Kibaki and the late Kijana Wamalwa. Their cooperation helped establish a formidable political movement that ended KANU’s long-standing dominance.

Gachagua disclosed that he benefited from Ngilu’s political experience during their morning engagement, particularly her explanation of how the NARC coalition was established and successfully implemented.

He added that their discussion covered political strategies and lessons that could help address corruption and impunity while steering the country towards economic prosperity.

The former Deputy President suggested that the experience shared by Ngilu had strengthened his understanding of coalition-building and the importance of political unity in achieving electoral success.

However, his most significant message was his comparison of the current political situation to the 2002 political transition.

Gachagua declared that Kenya was approaching another defining political moment, expressing confidence that opposition leaders could agree on a single presidential candidate capable of securing a decisive victory at the ballot.

His remarks are likely to attract attention as political formations continue positioning themselves ahead of the next General Election. Whether opposition leaders will successfully overcome their individual political ambitions and settle on one candidate remains an important question.
