Bank of Ghana to Launch Enhanced “Heritage Series” Cedi Notes in November

The Bank of Ghana has announced plans to introduce a new family of cedi banknotes known as the Heritage Series, featuring improved security measures and stronger materials designed to increase their durability.

Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama confirmed the development after the central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee meeting, explaining that the new notes would replace designs that have been in circulation for more than two decades.

The Heritage Series will cover all existing denominations, from GH¢1 to GH¢200. According to the Governor, the redesigned currency will incorporate advanced anti-counterfeiting features and improved materials intended to withstand frequent handling and prolonged use.

Beyond strengthening security, the new banknotes are expected to showcase Ghana’s national identity through modern designs that celebrate the country’s cultural heritage and honour prominent national figures.

Dr. Asiama also addressed concerns about what the introduction of the new currency means for existing banknotes. He clarified that the current cedi notes will not be withdrawn immediately and will remain legal tender alongside the Heritage Series.

He urged the public not to rush to exchange their existing notes, stressing that there is no need for panic. The transition is expected to take place without making the old currency worthless overnight.

The Governor further encouraged Ghanaians to handle the new banknotes carefully to reduce damage and replacement costs. He advised against stapling notes, writing on them or using them for decorative purposes, including money bouquets.

The official launch of the Heritage Series is scheduled for November 3, 2026, at the Bank Square in Accra.

The introduction of the new notes marks a planned update to Ghana’s currency system, with the central bank seeking to improve banknote security, durability and national representation while allowing existing notes to continue circulating during the transition.
