Police Deploy To Tetteh Quarshie As NPP Demonstrators Demand Evacuation Fund Details

Police officers have been deployed to the Tetteh Quarshie Roundabout in Accra as supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gather for the party’s “Ye Gye Ye Sika” demonstration over government spending on the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa.

The protesters are demanding full disclosure of the funds used in the exercise, including details of payments made, the number of people evacuated and the costs associated with transporting them back to Ghana.

The demonstration, organised by the NPP’s youth wing, is intended to pressure the government to account for the reported expenditure of approximately GH¢49.7 million on the evacuation of 1,964 Ghanaians from South Africa.

The party has questioned aspects of the figures and expenditure provided by the government. Among its demands are access to flight invoices, receipts, reconciled passenger records and evidence of financial support reportedly given to returnees.

NPP Deputy Director of Communications Kwesi Botchwey Jnr had also indicated that some of the evacuees who allegedly felt shortchanged were interested in joining the demonstration to demand answers.

The protest has placed Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa at the centre of the controversy, with the opposition calling for greater scrutiny of the ministry’s handling of the evacuation exercise.

However, the government’s account of the operation has faced challenges from the opposition over the interpretation of passenger records and expenditure figures. NDC communicator Julius Kwame Anthony has questioned the NPP’s claims and challenged the party to provide clear details of the alleged amounts owed to returnees.

The presence of police officers at Tetteh Quarshie Roundabout forms part of the security arrangements as demonstrators assemble. Their deployment comes as the protest draws attention to a wider political disagreement over transparency, public spending and accountability.

The NPP maintains that the government must provide documentary evidence to support the reported expenditure. The demonstration is therefore expected to keep pressure on the authorities to address questions surrounding the evacuation and explain how public funds were used.
