Former TV Star Regina Re Detained for 10 Days Over Mother’s Murder, Three Relatives Also Held

A Nairobi court has authorised police to detain former television quiz show host Regina Wambui Gitau, popularly known as Regina Re, and three relatives for 10 days as detectives investigate the killing of her 86-year-old mother in Loresho.

The decision was delivered on Monday, November 2, 2026, after investigators requested additional time to establish what happened to Dorita Lasinder Macharia at her residence.

The elderly woman was reportedly found dead inside her Loresho home on the night of October 30, with serious injuries that raised suspicions of a violent attack.

According to information presented in court, investigators are examining events that allegedly unfolded after a disagreement between Macharia and her granddaughter, Thandie Malaika Gitao.

Detectives told the court that the elderly woman had allegedly confronted her granddaughter over a situation involving her boyfriend and subsequently ordered her to leave the residence.

The investigating officer, Police Constable David Njoroge, reportedly told the court that the disagreement escalated, with Macharia also contacting her son for assistance in removing the granddaughter from the house.

Police further alleged that the granddaughter initially left but later returned to the residence.

The circumstances surrounding what happened afterwards remain a major focus of the investigation.

One of the most significant issues raised during the proceedings involved allegations that Regina and her brother were found attempting to clean the room where their mother had allegedly been killed. This is an allegation presented by investigators and has not been established as a court finding.

Prosecutors initially requested 15 days to complete their investigations, but the court granted 10 days instead.

Detectives want to retrieve and analyse CCTV footage from the estate, record statements from witnesses, examine fingerprints and obtain mobile phone call records.

They also intend to conduct a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of Macharia’s death before forwarding the investigation file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The four suspects will remain at Gigiri Police Station during the authorised detention period.

The case is scheduled for another mention on November 12, 2026.

Regina became a familiar face to Kenyan television audiences through the popular KTN quiz programme Who’s Smarter Now?, which aired between 1999 and 2006.

Her appearance in the ongoing investigation has therefore attracted considerable public attention.

However, an important distinction remains: the four individuals have been detained for investigative purposes and have not been convicted of murder. Their individual roles, if any, must be established through evidence and due legal process.

What do you think should happen next in this case? Should investigators be given more time to establish the truth, and what evidence do you believe will be most important? Share your thoughts in the comment section.
