Just Hours After Vowing to Relocate to US if Ruto Wins, Gachagua Faces Pressure to Explain Himself
National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has responded to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following his remarks about relocating to the United States if President William Ruto wins the 2027 General Election.
Speaking in Kiambaa Constituency, Kiambu County, on Monday, November 2, Ichung’wah questioned why Gachagua would consider leaving Kenya while millions of ordinary Kenyans have nowhere else to call home.
The Kikuyu MP reminded the former Deputy President that although he has a home in America, many Kenyans do not have the financial ability or opportunity to relocate abroad.
“Thank God you have a home in America, but where will the rest of the Kenyans who do not have homes there go?” Ichung’wah posed.
He further accused Gachagua of promoting politics that could create divisions between the Mount Kenya region and other Kenyan communities.
According to Ichung’wah, no single community can independently secure the presidency, adding that Mount Kenya needs to work with other communities to achieve its political goals.
He also challenged the assumption that all registered voters in the region automatically support one political side.
To support his argument, Ichung’wah cited Kiambu County, claiming that out of approximately 1.3 million registered voters, nearly 400,000 come from communities outside the Kikuyu and wider Mount Kenya-speaking groups.
Gachagua had made the remarks during a television interview on Sunday, where he discussed the possibility of moving to America if President Ruto secured another term in 2027.
The DCP leader suggested that divisions within the Mount Kenya region could contribute to an opposition defeat.
Ichung’wah’s response comes at a time when political leaders are intensifying their activities ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The exchange has also added another dimension to the growing disagreement between the two leaders, who were once close political allies.
With opposition leaders also working on possible alliances, the question of regional unity and national support continues to feature prominently in Kenya’s political debate.
