Why Has John Cena Returned to WWE Monday Night Raw?
November 3, 2026 sportnow JOHN CENA makes his return to the WWE on TV this evening, marking his first appearance in nearly half a year.
The 17-time world champion hung up his wrestling boots last December after a farewell tour throughout 2025.
His final match donned in his iconic denim shorts and colorful t-shirt took place at Saturday Night’s Main Event, where he faced Gunther in a poignant bout in Washington DC.
Nevertheless, Cena had always expressed his intention to remain active within WWE in another role after concluding his in-ring career.
He made a surprise appearance at Backlash in May, where he revealed the establishment of the ‘John Cena Classic’—an annual event celebrating superstars from both the main roster and NXT, set to commence in December.
Now, ‘The Face that Runs the Place’ is set to return to the flagship program, Monday Night Raw.

While there hasn’t been an official statement explaining Cena’s return to WWE, some speculation surrounds his appearance at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Cena himself announced the tournament at Backlash this May, yet the specific dates for the event remain unconfirmed.
He reiterated that the tournament is still on schedule during his visit to Fan Expo Canada in August, and later mentioned on NBC’s ‘Today’ show that it would take place in December.
WWE has yet to provide details about the event, especially with other shows such as Wrestlepalooza already scheduled for December 12 in Perth, Australia.
Cena might be in New York tonight to unveil further details regarding the show.
There’s also the possibility he’ll reveal the championship belt that the tournament winner will receive.
When announcing the tournament, Cena indicated that a new belt would be introduced and that fans could vote for the winner—regardless of match outcomes.
While reports suggest that the title may lean toward a ceremonial nature rather than an active championship, WWE has not disclosed any images or showcased the belt yet.
Cena is known for making an impact on WWE titles; he is credited with the creation of the spinning WWE Championship in 2005, which became a trademark design.
Next year, WrestleMania will make history by being the first to take place outside North America, scheduled for April 2027 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
However, an official date for WWE’s biggest annual event has yet to be announced, with just six months remaining until the show.
As one of WWE’s most recognizable figures, Cena may either be hosting the event or making a significant announcement regarding it.
