Bring Us Buses Now: Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma Calls On Big Funders For A Dangerous Eastern Cape Mission

Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, leader of the March and March Movement, has appealed to sponsors, business owners and members of the public to provide financial assistance and buses to transport her supporters to Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape following growing tensions involving foreign-owned businesses and local residents.

Ngobese-Zuma’s appeal comes after a video circulated widely on social media showing business owners reportedly from Somalia and Ethiopia chasing a group of South Africans in a township. The footage has attracted considerable attention, with residents expressing anger and concern over the confrontation.

Reacting to the incident in a video message, Ngobese-Zuma strongly condemned the conduct of the foreign business owners, describing their actions as unacceptable and provocative towards the local community. She argued that the incident reflected broader concerns about the treatment of South Africans in their own neighbourhoods.

The March and March leader revealed that her organisation intends to travel to Gqeberha to confront the issues surrounding foreign-owned spaza shops. She said members would seek to establish whether the businesses possess the necessary operating permits and demand that law enforcement authorities investigate the situation.

However, she acknowledged that financial difficulties were preventing the organisation from mobilising its members in large numbers. Consequently, she called on organisations, companies and individuals willing to support the campaign to sponsor transportation for the planned visit.

The movement has attracted national attention through its campaigns against undocumented immigration and demands for greater South African participation in township businesses. However, human rights organisations have criticised its activities, warning that confrontational campaigns could encourage xenophobia, intimidation and unlawful attacks against foreign nationals.

Meanwhile, tensions in Gqeberha have raised concerns among residents and business owners, particularly as communities attempt to prevent further confrontations.

Eastern Cape police have reportedly increased their presence in affected areas to prevent possible violence. Authorities have also urged community organisations to avoid taking the law into their own hands and instead report suspected violations through proper legal channels.

Despite the concerns surrounding the planned mobilisation, Ngobese-Zuma remains determined to secure transportation for her supporters to Gqeberha.
