UDA Senator Cheruiyot Reacts as Sifuna Complains Over Poor State Of Roads in Kwale
Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot has sparked debate after mocking Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna for complaining about the poor state of roads between Kinango and Kwale town.
According to a post by Mpasho News on X, Cheruiyot told Sifuna “Tandika katiba upitie juu” after the ODM Secretary General raised concerns over the deplorable road network in Kwale County.
“Tandika katiba upitie juu – Aaron Cheruiyot to Sifuna after complaining about the poor state of roads between Kinango and Kwale town,” Mpasho News reported.
The image shared shows Sifuna speaking at a Linda Mwananchi rally wearing a branded t-shirt, alongside Cheruiyot smiling while holding a microphone.
Sifuna had toured Kwale as part of the Linda Mwananchi Movement campaigns and lamented that roads connecting Kinango to Kwale town remain impassable despite the county being one of the original beneficiaries of the Equalisation Fund established under Article 204 of the Constitution to uplift marginalized areas.
Cheruiyot’s remarks, loosely translated as “lay the constitution down and step over it,” have been interpreted as a dismissal of constitutional provisions that guarantee equitable development.
The comment has drawn sharp criticism from opposition supporters and constitutional activists, including Pauline Njoroge, who termed it arrogance from someone entrusted with upholding the Constitution.
Supporters of Cheruiyot, however, argue that Sifuna was playing politics, since road construction in the area falls under both national and county governments, with ODM-allied governors having led Kwale for years.
The clash highlights growing political tensions between Kenya Kwanza and the Linda Mwananchi-aligned opposition over service delivery and constitutionalism ahead of 2027.
