Fearless Kenya Editors President Says Politicians, Goons Threaten Them If They Do Political Stories

Kenya Editors Guild President Zubeidah Koome has raised concerns over growing fear among journalists covering political events, warning that threats from goons, police officers and politicians are undermining press freedom.

Koome said journalists were increasingly hesitant to report on political activities because of the risks of being attacked, intimidated or threatened while carrying out their duties.

Speaking in Nairobi during the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, she called for accountability for perpetrators of attacks against media practitioners.

She urged authorities to ensure that journalists who have suffered violence while reporting receive justice, warning that failure to address such incidents could further expose media workers to intimidation.

Koome also challenged media organisations to take greater responsibility for the safety and welfare of their employees, particularly as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election.

She called on media houses to equip reporters with adequate training, medical insurance, protective equipment and proper employment contracts before deploying them to cover politically sensitive assignments.

According to Koome, journalists should not be sent into potentially dangerous situations without adequate preparation and guarantees for their welfare.

Her remarks come as concerns over the safety of media practitioners continue to feature in discussions about press freedom and the country’s democratic processes.

The 2027 elections are expected to generate extensive political activity, with journalists likely to play a central role in informing Kenyans about campaigns, candidates and electoral developments.

The International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists is observed annually on November 2 to highlight attacks against media workers and push for accountability for crimes committed against them.

Koome’s warning underscores the need for stronger protection measures for journalists as Kenya approaches another election season.
