Irungu Kang’ata Reveals How He Turned Down Ruto’s Deputy President Offer Before Quitting UDA
Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has disclosed that he was offered the powerful position of Deputy President by senior government officials before distancing himself from President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), revealing previously undisclosed details surrounding his political fallout with the ruling establishment.
Speaking during an interview with Kameme FM on Monday, November 2, 2026, Kang’ata revealed that he carefully considered the proposal but ultimately rejected it after weighing the potential political consequences of accepting the lucrative national position.
According to the governor, some individuals he consulted cautioned him that accepting the offer could turn him into a political traitor in the eyes of voters.
He was also advised that occupying the country’s second-highest office would not necessarily change public perceptions or resolve the disagreements that had emerged between him and the government.
Kang’ata maintained that the bigger question was not about securing an influential government position but whether accepting such an appointment would address the underlying political differences. He eventually concluded that the arrangement could expose him to even greater political complications.
His latest revelation has brought renewed attention to his deteriorating relationship with Ruto, particularly the failed attempts to reconcile their differences before his departure from the ruling party’s political camp.
The Murang’a governor also questioned the government’s willingness to accommodate divergent opinions, suggesting that disagreements over governance and political direction contributed significantly to their fallout.
His disclosure now offers another glimpse into the behind-the-scenes political manoeuvres surrounding his departure from UDA as Kenya approaches the 2027 General Election.
