They Treated Me Like a King: Gachagua Reveals Sh150 Million US Trip Where He Spent Nothing
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has opened up about his lavish reception in the United States, claiming Kenyans living abroad treated him like royalty during his two-month visit.
The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader says he was overwhelmed by the love and generosity shown to him and his wife, Pastor Dorcas Gachagua, during their stay in America between August 26 and October 20.
According to the former Deputy President, his reception began right at the airport, where excited Kenyans turned up with flowers, songs and celebrations to welcome him.
Gachagua claimed he and his wife did not spend their stay in hotels. Instead, members of the Kenyan community reportedly arranged for them to live in private homes, with some families temporarily making room for the visiting couple.
He narrated how women regularly delivered food and nuts, while others volunteered to wash and iron his clothes.
In what could surprise many, Gachagua also revealed that supporters took him shopping, bought him shoes and jeans, and encouraged him to pick whatever he wanted without worrying about the bill.
The former Deputy President said the community also organised prayer meetings, Bible readings and singing sessions, making the visit both a social and spiritual experience.
Gachagua disclosed that the entire trip cost approximately Sh150 million, but claimed he did not personally spend even a single shilling.
He attributed the expenditure to contributions from Kenyans in the diaspora, who reportedly catered for accommodation, air tickets, vehicles, food and other logistical arrangements.
He also revealed that he spent part of his stay in prayer, fasting and personal reflection, thinking about what he described as the difficult situation facing his community and the country.
The DCP leader said the experience strengthened his resolve to defend the interests of his supporters and build political alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election.
He added that he began putting his political plans into action immediately after returning to Kenya, starting with engagements at his Wamunyoro home in Nyeri County.
Gachagua’s latest revelations are likely to spark fresh debate, particularly over the Sh150 million expenditure and the extraordinary hospitality he says he received from Kenyans in America.
