Sheila Chepkirui’s New York Marathon Triumph: How Much the Kenyan Star Took Home

Kenyan marathon star Sheila Chepkirui has added another major achievement to her impressive running career after winning the 2026 New York City Marathon, earning approximately KSh13 million in official prize money.

The 35-year-old delivered a remarkable performance on Sunday, November 1, 2026, to reclaim the women’s title in one of the world’s most prestigious long-distance races.

Chepkirui completed the 42.195km course in 2 hours, 24 minutes and 36 seconds, finishing ahead of fellow Kenyan Hellen Obiri, who was seeking to defend her title.

The victory was particularly significant because Chepkirui had to produce a late burst of speed to separate herself from her closest challenger.

With approximately 150 metres remaining, she accelerated and pulled away to secure the win, adding another memorable chapter to Kenya’s dominance in international distance running.

Her official prize money is estimated at KSh13 million, although her overall earnings from the competition could be higher.

As an Adidas-sponsored athlete, Chepkirui may also benefit from sponsorship-related performance bonuses or other contractual payments. However, no specific figures for additional payments have been publicly confirmed, meaning they should not be included as part of her verified race earnings.

The New York Road Runners’ official prize-money schedule confirms that the winner of the professional women’s race receives US$100,000, approximately KSh13 million.

Chepkirui’s victory also came in a competitive field featuring several experienced international runners. American Jessica McClain finished second in 2:24:42, just six seconds behind the Kenyan, while Obiri settled for third in 2:24:43.

The result meant Kenya occupied two of the three women’s podium positions, with veteran compatriot Edna Kiplagat finishing fourth in 2:25:42 and Mercy Chelangat taking fifth in 2:25:46.

Chepkirui’s latest triumph is also a return to the top of a race she knows exceptionally well. She previously won the New York City Marathon in 2024, making the 2026 victory her second title in three years.

Born on December 27, 1990, Chepkirui has built an impressive career through track and road racing. Her achievements include winning the African Championships 5,000m title in 2016 and earning bronze in the 10,000m at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

She also demonstrated her marathon ability at the 2023 Berlin Marathon, where she finished second in a personal-best time of 2:17:49.

Her return to the top in New York further strengthens her reputation as one of Kenya’s accomplished marathon runners.

The 2026 edition was particularly memorable because the race celebrated the 50th anniversary of the famous five-borough course. Nearly 60,000 athletes took part in the event, which attracts elite runners and recreational participants from across the world.

Chepkirui’s latest achievement has added another major international title to Kenya’s athletics record and provided another reason for Kenyans to celebrate their country’s success in long-distance running.
