MP Njeri Maina offers free legal support to Gen Zs as public hearings begin
Kirinyaga MP Maina Njeri./HNADOUTKirinyaga MP Maina Njeri has reaffirmed her commitment to defending young Kenyans’ rights, with her legal team offering free legal services to Gen Zs and their families as public hearings begin.
In a Facebook post a day earlier, Njeri said her legal team was on standby following reports that 30 young people had been arrested in Rongai town.
She appealed for an update on their situation, writing, “I’m told there are 30 youths whoβve been arrested at Rongai town. Can anyone give me a status update? Our legal team is on standby.β
In a subsequent Facebook statement, Njeri said she and fellow advocates had convened in court to offer pro bono legal services during three days of public hearings that began that day.
βFrom standing with Gen-Z at Kahawa Law Courts to representing them at the public hearings; my commitment remains firm: their voices must be heard, their dignity respected, and their rights protected,β she said.
Kirinyaga MP Maina Njeri./HNADOUTNjeri said the legal team was committed to standing with the young people and their families in their pursuit of justice, beyond what she described as the sensationalisation of the cases.
She also reiterated her support for young Kenyans calling for a better country, saying their voices mattered and their future was worth defending.
Her latest move builds on her previous involvement in representing young people arrested during the Gen Z demonstrations.
In August, she recalled spending long days at Kahawa Law Courts defending protesters, saying she would arrive as early as 7am and leave late in the evening.
βDuring the Gen Z protests, I was on the frontline defending those arrested during the protests. I could enter the court at 7 am and leave court late in the evening,β she said during a youth engagement forum organised by the Democratic Congress Party in Nyeri.
Maina also credited former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua with contributing Sh10 million towards securing bail for some of the youths arrested during the demonstrations.
βOur party leader, Rigathi Gachagua, contributed Sh10 million towards securing bail for those arrested during the demonstrations,β she said.
She has previously urged young Kenyans to take their civic activism beyond demonstrations and pursue elective positions, arguing that they should participate directly in shaping policy and governance.
In her latest Facebook statement, Njeri reiterated that her legal team would continue supporting the young people and their families in their pursuit of justice.
βTo every young person demanding a better Kenya: your voice matters. Your future is worth defending. We stand with you,β she said.
