I Hope It Is Not True. If It Is, Then Guys We Have a Problem – Franklin Cudjoe

Policy analyst and social commentator Franklin Cudjoe has expressed concern over a statement attributed to former Methodist Bishop Stephen R. Bosomtwe Ayensu, who reportedly said he would choose the National Cathedral project over the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.

Reacting in a Facebook post, Cudjoe wrote, “I hope it is not true. If it is, then guys we have a problem,” expressing disappointment over what he considered a questionable position on Ghana’s development priorities.

Cudjoe used the biblical image of a lost sheep to describe his reaction, referring to the bishop as a “huge sheep lost” and urging people to “secure the 99 sheep” and “go find him and bring him back.” His remarks appeared to reflect disappointment while also calling for understanding and dialogue.

His criticism centred on the importance of prioritising projects that directly improve the lives of citizens. He questioned why a religious leader would reportedly favour the National Cathedral over a major road project expected to improve transportation, safety, economic activity and connectivity between Accra and Kumasi.

The comments have renewed discussions about national development priorities and the allocation of public resources in Ghana. The National Cathedral project has remained controversial, with critics arguing that greater attention should be given to essential infrastructure and public services.

Cudjoe’s reaction also highlights the relationship between religious influence and public policy. While religion remains an important part of Ghanaian society, his comments suggest that national development decisions should give considerable attention to practical needs such as roads, education and healthcare.

Ultimately, his post has brought renewed attention to the debate over how political and religious leaders define national progress, emphasising the need to balance spiritual interests with projects that improve the living conditions of ordinary citizens.
