Migori Stadium Upgrade Advances as Kenya Steps Up Preparations for AFCON 2027
The ongoing transformation of Migori Stadium has reached another important milestone, raising expectations among sports enthusiasts and residents as Kenya intensifies preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Raymond Omollo has highlighted the progress of the project, revealing that canopy installation is currently underway as the government continues investing in modern sporting infrastructure across the country.
The upgraded Migori Stadium is expected to accommodate approximately 10,000 spectators, making it an important sporting facility for Migori County and the wider South Nyanza region. Its development is also part of broader efforts to promote sports, nurture young talent and stimulate economic activities within the Sugar Belt.
According to the project details shared by Omollo, the facility will feature a football pitch designed to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards. It will also have an eight-lane running track, modern changing rooms, a gymnasium, a basketball court, VIP lounges and a pavilion.
These facilities are expected to provide opportunities for different sporting disciplines while creating a better environment for athletes, teams and supporters. The stadium could also become an important venue for local competitions, training programmes and community sporting events.
The development comes as Kenya prepares to co-host AFCON 2027 alongside Uganda and Tanzania. The continental tournament has increased attention on the need for modern sports facilities capable of supporting international competitions and improving the country’s sporting standards.
Beyond football, the upgraded stadium is expected to contribute to the local economy. Increased sporting activities could create opportunities for traders, transport operators, hospitality businesses and other small enterprises that depend on visitors attending major events.
Omollo also noted the role of the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration in supporting the project through coordination, oversight and security facilitation to ensure smooth implementation.
As construction progresses, residents will be looking forward to seeing the facility completed and opened for public use. What are your views on the ongoing Migori Stadium upgrade and its potential impact on sports and economic development? Share your remarks and comments in the comment section.
