It Wasn’t Sifuna or Gachagua”:Malalah Breaks Silence on Kalonzo’s Viral Slip
Former UDA Secretary-General Cleophas Malalah has come out fiercely in defense of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka following intense public debate surrounding his recent media appearance.
Speaking during a live broadcast on Citizen Sunday Live, Malalah addressed allegations that Kalonzo was publicly humiliated by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
According to Malalah, critics are taking advantage of Kalonzo’s gentlemanly demeanor to paint an unjust portrait of the veteran politician.
“People take advantage of Kalonzo because of his soft-spoken nature, and they want to paint an ugly picture of who he is,” Malalah stated firmly. “It was neither Sifuna nor Gachagua humiliating Kalonzo. It was simply a political moment—a slip of the tongue.”
The controversial moment erupted after comments surrounding Edwin Sifuna’s political trajectory and his involvement with the Linda Mwananchi movement raised eyebrows across the political divide. Social media erupted with claims that Kalonzo had been outmaneuvered and exposed live on air.
However, Malalah clarified that Kalonzo’s underlying intention was purely grounded in party procedure and legal frameworks rather than personal weakness.
“He wanted to make the point that, legally, Sifuna’s candidature will only be concretised when the National Delegates Conference (NDC) ratifies the decision to endorse him as the Linda Mwananchi presidential candidate,” Malalah explained.
He conceded, however, that the execution fell flat: “The rendition of the message was wrong.”
The debate comes at a volatile time in Kenyan politics, where key opposition leaders and political alignments are jostling for position ahead of upcoming electoral calculations.
Kalonzo, long viewed as a diplomatic consensus-builder, often finds his mild-mannered political style interpreted by critics as hesitation.
Malalah’s intervention shifts the spotlight back onto formal party procedures, reminding political players that endorsement rallies mean little until formal delegatory structures validate them.
Despite the clarification, political analysts continue to debate whether Kalonzo’s communication mishap will hurt his standing among coalition partners or if his legal point will ultimately hold weight as party conventions draw near.
