Politics Is Unpredictable: Matiang’i Reacts To The Results Of Brazil’s Elections
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has reacted to the election in Brazil, saying the result shows how unpredictable politics can be, and has sent a message about President William Ruto’s chances in 2027.
According to Matiang’i, a united opposition candidate has just lost an election to an incumbent president in Brazil. He said the outcome is a reminder that politics is very dynamic, and that a united front does not automatically guarantee victory at the ballot.
He then turned to Kenya. Matiang’i said the latest credible survey demonstrates very clearly that Ruto has only one pathway, which is a split opposition. In his view, the president’s hopes of a second term depend on opposition leaders failing to rally behind a single candidate.
The remarks come as opposition figures debate who should carry the flag next year. Kalonzo Musyoka, Edwin Sifuna and others have all been mentioned, and the heckling at the Linda Mwananchi party launch showed how sensitive the question has become. Matiang’i, whose camp is aligned with the Jubilee Party, is also seen as a possible contender, though he did not say so in his post.
Sifuna had earlier pointed to the elections in Serbia and Brazil as a source of encouragement for the opposition. Matiang’i’s reading of Brazil is more cautious, using the same result to warn that unity alone is not enough and that nothing can be taken for granted.
He did not name the survey he was referring to or share its figures, so the details of its findings are not clear. Government allies have previously dismissed polls that suggest the president faces a tough contest, insisting that elections are won on the ground and not on paper.
The message to the opposition is plain. Avoiding a split should be the priority if they hope to deny the president a path to victory.
