Gachagua Faces Hostile Reception in Kikuyu as Locals Chant Two Term Slogans in His Face
Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua faced a hostile reception during a political visit to Kikuyu Constituency after some residents disrupted his address with chants supporting President William Ruto.
The former Deputy President struggled to address the crowd as groups of residents repeatedly shouted “Tutam”, a slogan associated with support for Ruto’s bid for a second term in office.
Footage from the event showed some attendees using vuvuzelas and megaphones to drown out speeches by Gachagua and members of his delegation. Efforts to restore order did little to stop the interruptions, forcing the speakers to contend with continued heckling.
The incident exposed growing political divisions in Kikuyu, an area that remains important in the wider Mount Kenya political landscape.
Local political rivalries, including tensions involving National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, have added to the political competition in the constituency.
The reception also highlights the challenges facing Gachagua as he seeks to strengthen his political support in the Mount Kenya region. While opposition leaders continue to explore ways of building a stronger political movement, the incident suggests that winning grassroots support will remain a major test.
With the 2027 General Election approaching, political leaders from both sides are expected to intensify efforts to win over voters in the region.
