Nyakwaka Leads Migori Youth’s Breakthrough Against Mombasa United
Philemon Nyakwaka played a decisive role as Migori Youth recorded their first FKF Premier League victory of the season, scoring the opening goal in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Mombasa United at Awendo Green Stadium.
The forward converted a penalty shortly before half-time to reward Migori’s persistent attacking efforts before Frederick Ologi secured the result late in the second half.
For a team that had collected three draws from its opening matches, the breakthrough was important.
Migori had remained unbeaten against Kenya Police, Mathare United and Shabana but had been unable to turn those results into a victory.
Nyakwaka was involved in several of the hosts’ promising moments before opening the scoring.
He threatened in the 15th minute after receiving a pass from Nehemiah Onchiri, only for Austin Nyagol to clear his effort.
The striker remained a threat as Migori continued to push forward, although the visitors also created openings of their own.
Migori eventually gained the advantage in the 43rd minute after the referee awarded a penalty for handball. Nyakwaka stepped up and calmly beat goalkeeper Mustapha Oduor to give the hosts a lead heading into the interval
He nearly increased the advantage seven minutes after the restart when he struck the upright from a tight angle. Oduor then kept Mombasa in contention with saves that denied both Nyakwaka and Geoffrey Odira.
The missed opportunities meant Migori could not relax despite their control of the match.
That insurance goal arrived in the 85th minute. Dennis Oguta sent Christopher Koloti through, and the substitute’s cutback allowed Ologi to finish from close range.
Nyakwaka’s opener had provided the platform, while Ologi’s late contribution ensured Migori collected all three points.
The result moved Migori to six points and ended their wait for a league victory.
