Cherargei Dismisses Linda Mwananchi Movement as Timothy Wanyonyi Joins Edwin Sifuna’s Camp

Nandi Senator Kiprotich Arap Cherargei has criticised the newly launched Linda Mwananchi Movement, questioning its national influence as political realignments continue to reshape Kenya’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Cherargei expressed his reservations through a statement shared on his official social media account, shortly after Westlands Member of Parliament Timothy Wanyonyi publicly associated himself with the political movement led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

Wanyonyi’s appearance at the movement’s new national headquarters in Lavington attracted attention after photographs showed him standing alongside Sifuna and other political figures. His presence, together with his participation in the launch activities, was viewed as a significant political development.

However, Cherargei was quick to question the significance of the development, dismissing the movement as a political initiative with limited regional influence rather than a platform capable of attracting nationwide support.

The UDA senator argued that the organisation appeared more focused on political interests in the Bungoma region than establishing itself as a strong national movement capable of influencing politics across Kenya.

He also questioned the unity being presented by politicians attending the launch, pointing to the fact that several prominent figures continued operating under their separate political parties.

According to Cherargei’s argument, the arrangement raised questions about the level of confidence these politicians had in Sifuna’s leadership and whether they were genuinely prepared to operate under one political platform.

His comments have generated discussions among political observers, with different opinions emerging over whether the criticism reflects weaknesses within the new movement or an attempt by government allies to undermine its growing popularity.

Despite the criticism, activities at the Lavington headquarters continued, with supporters and political leaders maintaining an enthusiastic atmosphere throughout the launch.

Wanyonyi and other prominent attendees interacted with delegates, participated in photographs and demonstrated their involvement in the movement’s activities.

The development has added another dimension to the growing political contest between government supporters and opposition figures seeking to establish stronger alliances before the next general election.

With Sifuna’s movement now officially launched, its ability to attract influential politicians, expand beyond regional boundaries and maintain unity among its supporters will likely become important factors in determining its political future.

Meanwhile, Cherargei’s remarks have demonstrated that the emergence of the new political outfit is already attracting criticism from leaders within the ruling coalition.
