ODM Again Splits into Two Months After Sifuna’s Exit as Fresh Tension Emerges Over Ruto’s 2027 Pact

Fresh political turbulence has hit the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as internal rivalries have reignited over the party’s proposed pre-election partnership with President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Reports published by People Daily have revealed that deep ideological fractures have re-emerged within the party hierarchy, splitting lawmakers into two opposing camps regarding their engagement with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

This latest crisis has surfaced just months after former Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna exited his position following his vocal resistance to unconditional alignment with the regime.

Now, a major rift has opened between legislators demanding a structured, written agreement and those advocating for direct, unconditional backing for President Ruto’s re-election bid.

According to reporting from People Daily, MPs Elisha Odhiambo (Gem), Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), and Jared Okello (Nyando) have thrown their full weight behind Ruto’s second-term campaign.

They have publicly argued that the Luo community and ODM should offer their support freely, without imposing rigid prerequisites or requiring a formal written contract as a condition for political cooperation.

However, this stance has clashed directly with the party’s top leadership. ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga, National Assembly Minority Whip Junet Mohamed, and party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga have insisted that any engagement with UDA must be strictly governed by formal negotiations.

They have maintained that the party must secure concrete executive commitments and binding terms before declaring official support.

As these conflicting positions play out publicly, ODM has found itself navigating an increasingly delicate balancing act.

The internal tug-of-war has raised fresh questions about the party’s long-term unity and political strategy as the country approaches 2027.
