Gachagua Alleges The Reason Why The Rironi-Mau Summit Road Has Stalled

DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua has contradicted Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir over the reason behind the slowdown of works on the Rironi to Mau Summit road. According to Gachagua, the real problem is that the Chinese have backed out of the project, not a shortage of bitumen.

Chirchir had earlier said that only one section of the highway would be ready by December. He linked the delay to a bitumen shortage, which he blamed on the war between the United States and Iran. Gachagua has rejected that explanation outright, insisting that the government is not telling Kenyans the full story.

The former Deputy President said the contractors from China have pulled out, and that this is what has left the works crawling. He did not present documents or any statement from the firms involved to support the claim, so it remains his own assertion for now.

The road is one of the biggest infrastructure projects in the country. It is meant to ease the heavy traffic on the Nairobi to Nakuru corridor, which carries trucks, buses and private cars to western Kenya and neighbouring countries. Motorists have endured long jams and frequent accidents on the route for years, and many had hoped the upgrade would be done by the end of the year.

Gachagua’s remarks add a political edge to what had been presented as a supply problem. If his version is correct, it would point to deeper trouble with how the project is financed and managed. If the minister’s account holds, it would mean the delay is temporary and tied to global events beyond the government’s control.

Kenyans who use the highway every day are left waiting for a clear answer on when the full road will open, and on which of the two explanations is true.
