No More June 30 Cutoff: KRA Shortens Annual Filing Window for Individual Taxpayers

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has officially announced a significant shift in the annual tax filing calendar, moving the deadline for individual income tax returns from the traditional June 30 to April 30.

Enacted under the provisions of the Finance Act 2026, the updated filing timeline takes effect on January 1, 2027, giving individual taxpayers a shortened four-month window following the close of the calendar year to complete their annual obligations.

The statutory change applies to all individual income tax returns for the 2026 year of income, including salaried employees subject to Pay As You Earn (PAYE), sole proprietors, freelancers, consultants, and individuals with rental or investment income.

Under the updated system, individuals must submit their filed returns by the last day of the fourth month following the end of the tax year.

The decision aims to reduce systemic network congestion typically experienced on the iTax portal during late June, enhance early revenue collection, and allow tax authorities sufficient time to validate pre-populated return data using integrated eTIMS records.

Importantly, the adjustment strictly targets individual taxpayers, while corporate bodies and non-individual entities will maintain their existing statutory deadlines tied to the sixth month after the close of their financial year.

Taxpayers are advised to secure their P9 forms from employers early, reconcile withholding tax credits, and update their iTax profiles well ahead of the April 30, 2027, cutoff to avoid late-filing penalties.

The administrative shift highlights KRA’s broader push toward digital integration, real-time compliance tracking, and streamlined tax administration nationwide.
