RIP: Sad News as Kakamega Headteacher’s Wife Dies While Heading to a Wedding in Nairobi
A Kakamega headteacher has been thrown into mourning after losing his wife, who was heading to a wedding in Nairobi when she lost her life in a tragic road accident.
Geoffrey Andabwa, a headteacher at a comprehensive school in Malava, Kakamega County, was overcome with grief after identifying his wife’s body at a mortuary in Eldoret. She had left their home just hours earlier, looking forward to attending a wedding alongside her colleagues.
His wife was among six residents of Mateta village in Malava who died after a lorry rammed into two vehicles, a Toyota Noah and a Toyota Probox, at Coromat along the Eldoret Nakuru Highway on Friday night. Five of the victims were women, while three were teachers.
The group was travelling to Nairobi for a wedding after completing their responsibilities in overseeing national examinations. They reportedly departed from the village at around 4pm on Friday.
Andabwa’s ordeal began when he repeatedly tried calling his wife without success. The family hosting the wedding later reached out to him, seeking to know whether he had communicated with her after failing to reach her and other invited guests.Shortly afterwards, he received distressing information that the vehicle carrying his wife had been involved in a serious accident. He immediately rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, where the injured passengers had been taken.
However, his hopes of finding his wife alive were crushed when he failed to see her among those receiving medical attention. He then proceeded to the mortuary, where he was asked to identify the bodies.
Andabwa recounted the painful moment he recognised his wife among the deceased, saying he could hardly believe that the woman who had left home alive earlier that day was now dead.
A family friend, Amunga Wasilwa, confirmed that the incident had plunged Mateta village into grief. He disclosed that a married couple was also among those who perished.
Eyewitnesses said the lorry was travelling from Nakuru when its driver allegedly lost control while attempting to avoid a fuel tanker that had broken down along the highway. It struck the two vehicles before overturning approximately 100 metres away.
Police have since launched investigations, while the wreckage of the Toyota Noah and Toyota Probox was taken to Taraka Police Station.
