KRA Reveals What Could Happen to Kenyans With Unpaid Tax Debts Before Deadline
KRA has urged Kenyans with unpaid tax debts to settle their outstanding obligations before its Tax Amnesty Programme has reached its December deadline.
In a notice issued on November 1, 2026, the authority has reminded taxpayers that the relief programme has offered a 100 per cent waiver on eligible penalties, interest and fines.
The programme has given individuals and businesses an opportunity to clear qualifying debts without paying accumulated charges.
However, KRA has maintained that taxpayers must meet specific conditions to benefit from the relief.
Under the programme, eligible taxpayers have been required to file all outstanding returns and settle their principal tax by December 31, 2026.
The Finance Act, 2026, has reintroduced the amnesty through amendments to Section 37E of the Tax Procedures Act.
Taxpayers who have fully paid their principal tax for periods ending December 31, 2025, have qualified without submitting separate applications.
KRA has also allowed taxpayers with outstanding late-filing penalties to qualify after submitting pending returns, including nil returns.
However, the relief has excluded tax liabilities arising from January 1, 2026, onwards.
Customs duties administered under the East African Community Customs Management Act have also fallen outside the programme.
For those who have still owed principal tax, KRA has provided a lump-sum payment option.
Taxpayers who have cleared their outstanding principal amounts have qualified for the waiver on eligible penalties, interest and fines.
The authority has cautioned Kenyans against waiting until the final days, as the programme has carried a fixed deadline.
Those seeking the relief have been encouraged to review their tax records and confirm whether their outstanding obligations have qualified.
KRA has made further information about eligibility and the application process available through its official website.
The authority has also directed taxpayers to use the iTax platform to regularise their accounts.
With the December 31 deadline approaching, KRA has urged individuals and businesses to take advantage of the relief before the programme has ended.
