How Uhuru Went Missing During A Planned Meeting With Gachagua In The Last Minute

A highly anticipated reconciliation meeting between former President Uhuru Kenyatta and DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua has collapsed after Kenyatta became unavailable, according to the Sunday Nation. The session had been tentatively planned for last Tuesday but never took place, leaving a rift that has split Mt. Kenya politics unresolved.

Sources from Kenyatta’s camp told the paper that he was either unavailable or had travelled out of the country. Gachagua later clarified that no formal date had ever been fixed for the meeting.

The initiative is driven by Mt. Kenya elders and regional leaders who want a united political front ahead of the 2027 General Election. It is the fourth push since 2022 and, notably, brings Deputy President Kithure Kindiki into the mediation. Kindiki has reportedly reached out to veterans such as Kiraitu Murungi to help bring Kenyatta to the table and fill the leadership gap in the region.

Insiders in Kenyatta’s camp say he remains reluctant to mend fences. His allies cite deep differences in political philosophy and fear that an alliance with Gachagua could hurt his nationwide standing.

Gachagua’s side sees things differently. After his 2024 impeachment, he moved to the DCP, and his team believes a truce with Uhuru is essential to consolidate the fragmented Mt. Kenya vote and strengthen his place in the wider opposition.

The math is also complicated by their presidential choices. Uhuru’s faction is largely aligned with Fred Matiang’i through the Jubilee Party, while Gachagua has publicly backed Kalonzo Musyoka and Sifuna as opposition coalition talks continue. Those differences mean that even if the two men eventually sit down, agreeing on a candidate could prove harder than agreeing to talk.
