Manqoba Mngqithi Explains What May Have Cost Sundowns Their CAF Champions League Campaign

Former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has reflected on the club’s recent early departure from the CAF Champions League, offering insight into what he views as a critical misstep during their continental campaign. The Pretoria-based side entered Africa’s premier club competition as one of the favorites, making their unexpected elimination a bitter disappointment for both the management and their vocal fanbase.

Mngqithi, who spent years within the Sundowns technical setup before his departure, noted that while bad luck played a role in the outcome, tactical and decision-making errors ultimately cost the team. Although specific operational details of his analysis remain brief, his assessment points to strategic shortcomings that prevented the Brazilians from capitalizing on key moments during the matches. Having helped guide Sundowns through numerous grueling continental fixtures in past seasons, his observations carry significant weight among supporters and football analysts.

The early exit from the Champions League serves as a sharp reminder of the fine margins in African club football, where minor errors often lead to immediate punishment. For Sundowns, a club that consistently sets high standards and aims to dominate both domestically and across the continent, failing to reach the late stages of the tournament requires serious reflection.

With their continental ambitions cut short for the current season, Mamelodi Sundowns must now re-focus their efforts on domestic competition, including the South African top flight and local cup tournaments. The technical team will need to evaluate player performances, tactical setups, and squad depth to address the weaknesses exposed during their continental run. Mngqithi’s comments have added to the ongoing conversation among fans regarding the team’s direction, highlighting the pressure on the club to learn from these mistakes and rebuild stronger for future CAF campaigns.
