Orlando Pirates Beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 to End Their Unbeaten Run in Soweto Derby
Orlando Pirates claimed the bragging rights in the first Soweto Derby of the Betway Premiership season after defeating arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The highly anticipated encounter delivered plenty of drama as the Buccaneers secured an important victory, bringing Chiefsâ unbeaten record to an end and giving their supporters plenty to celebrate.
Pirates made their intentions clear early in the match, putting pressure on the Chiefs defence and creating opportunities in search of the opening goal.
The Buccaneers eventually found the breakthrough through Yanela Mbuthuma in the 24th minute, with his effort taking a deflection before finding the back of the net.
Chiefs responded and managed to get themselves back into the contest when Pule Mmodi scored the equaliser after Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine failed to deal with a cross from Mfundo Vilakazi.
However, Pirates regained the advantage shortly after the restart. Tshepang Moremi found the net in the 55th minute to make it 2-1 and put the Buccaneers back in front.
Chiefs attempted to find another equaliser, but Pirates managed to protect their lead despite late pressure. The match also ended with the Buccaneers reduced to 10 players after Inacio Miguel received a second yellow card in the 90th minute.
The victory represents a significant result for Pirates in the race for league honours, while Chiefs will have to regroup after suffering defeat against their biggest rivals.
For the Buccaneers, winning the first Soweto Derby of the season is a major boost as the battle for Betway Premiership points continues.
