Halftime at Royal Bafokeng Stadium: Sundowns Lead Durban City 1-0
Mamelodi Sundowns have taken a one-goal lead into the halftime break of their Betway Premiership clash against Durban City at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg on Saturday evening. The Brazilians are ahead 1-0 after a goal from Thabang Matuludi in the 34th minute.
The match kicked off at 20:15 under the lights in the North West province. Sundowns, sitting second on the log with 23 points from nine games, came into the fixture looking to stay close to league leaders Orlando Pirates. Durban City, in around 10th place with seven points from eight matches, have struggled for consistency this season but arrived with some recent positives after reaching the CAF Confederation Cup group stages for the first time.
Matuludi’s goal gave Masandawana the edge after a first half in which they controlled large parts of the play. The defender found the net to reward Sundowns’ pressure. Durban City, managed by Eric Tinkler, worked hard to stay in the game but found it difficult to create clear chances against a well-organised Sundowns side coached by Miguel Cardoso.
Sundowns bounced back midweek with a 1-0 win over Marumo Gallants in the Carling Knockout. That result came after their early exit from the CAF Champions League. Durban City, who recently lifted the Nedbank Cup, will look to improve their league form in the second half. They made changes at the break as they tried to find a way back into the contest.
Both teams have history in this fixture. Sundowns won the corresponding match last season and have generally had the upper hand since Durban City rebranded from Maritzburg United. The home side’s supporters at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium will hope their team can protect the lead and pick up another three points.
With 45 minutes still to play, the result remains open. Sundowns will aim to add to their advantage and tighten their grip on the title race. Durban City need a response if they are to climb the table and build on their cup success. The second half promises more action as both sides chase their targets in the Betway Premiership.
