Floods Hit Nairobi: Vehicles Stuck, Roads Cut Off as One Person Is Swept Away by Heavy Rain
Heavy rains have caused flooding in several parts of Kenya, with Nairobi among the areas affected as concerns grow over the country’s preparedness for the anticipated El Niño rains.
On Saturday, October 31, several roads in Nairobi were flooded following a heavy downpour, leaving motorists struggling to move through waterlogged sections. Areas including Parklands, Githurai and Westlands experienced flooding, with vehicles and pedestrians facing difficulties navigating the affected roads.
In Parklands, First Avenue near Oshwal School was among the affected locations, prompting the Parklands Residents Association to raise concerns about the city’s ability to handle prolonged and heavier rainfall.
Githurai Roundabout was also affected, while a City Shuttle bus was reportedly left stuck in a ditch along Waiyaki Way in Westlands following the heavy rains.
Meanwhile, the flooding situation has extended beyond Nairobi. The Kenya Red Cross reported that one person was swept away while attempting to cross an overflowing river in Baraka, Olkaria Village, Kajiado South, on Friday night. Search operations were ongoing as emergency teams worked to establish the person’s whereabouts.
The incidents have renewed questions about the effectiveness of flood preparedness measures, particularly after authorities announced several interventions aimed at protecting communities from the expected heavy rainfall.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja previously outlined a KSh10 billion flood mitigation programme, including drainage improvements, river rehabilitation and infrastructure projects.
However, the latest flooding has left residents questioning whether the announced measures are translating into meaningful improvements on the ground.
As more rainfall is expected during the October-December season, Kenyans are being urged to exercise caution, avoid crossing flooded rivers and stay away from dangerous waterlogged roads.
The unfolding situation has once again highlighted the need for effective drainage systems and emergency response measures to protect lives and property.
