Sarkodie Fears Kumasi Rapperholic Could End as NSA Reportedly Charges Nearly GH₵400,000
Ghanaian award-winning rapper Sarkodie has expressed concern about the future of his annual Rapperholic concert in Kumasi following a significant increase in charges for using the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
The rapper revealed that the rising costs associated with organising the event could make it difficult for his team to continue bringing the popular concert to the Ashanti Regional capital.
His comments followed revelations by NY DJ that the National Sports Authority (NSA) reportedly charged approximately GH₵400,000 for the use of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to host this year’s Rapperholic concert.
Reacting to the reported amount, Sarkodie disclosed that the financial demands had increased considerably compared to what his team paid for the previous edition.
According to the rapper, the team paid almost three times the amount they spent last year, raising concerns about whether the Kumasi edition of Rapperholic could remain financially sustainable.
Sarkodie admitted that he and his management had already questioned whether the event would be able to continue in Kumasi if the charges remained at such a high level.
In his appeal, the award-winning musician called on the relevant authorities to reconsider the fees and adopt a more reasonable approach to help sustain the event.
“The sad part is myself and the team asked if Kumasi Rapperholic will be able to continue. We paid almost three times what we paid for last year this year. We plead with authorities to be a bit reasonable with these fees to be able to keep this economic boosting event in Kumasi,” Sarkodie stated.
Rapperholic has become an important entertainment event, attracting music lovers, industry players and visitors to the city while creating business opportunities for vendors, hospitality operators and other local businesses.
The rapper’s concerns have therefore raised questions about the cost of hosting major entertainment events at public sporting facilities.
For now, the future of the Kumasi edition remains uncertain as Sarkodie appeals for more reasonable charges to ensure that the concert continues bringing entertainment and economic activity to the Ashanti Region.
