Da Cruz Set for Memorable Day in Kaizer Chiefs Career

Fernando Da Cruz Faces Major Test as Kaizer Chiefs Prepare for First Soweto Derby Against Orlando Pirates

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz is preparing for a significant milestone in his coaching career in South Africa as he gets ready to lead Amakhosi into his first-ever Soweto Derby against arch-rivals Orlando Pirates.

The highly anticipated encounter is scheduled to take place at the sold-out FNB Stadium on Saturday, 31 October 2026, with kick-off set for 15:30. It will be another important chapter in one of the biggest football rivalries on the African continent.

Having joined Chiefs at the beginning of the season, Da Cruz has experienced the expectations and demands that come with managing one of South Africa’s most supported football clubs. However, Saturday’s encounter will provide him with his first opportunity to experience the intensity of the Soweto Derby from the technical area.

Speaking ahead of the match, the French tactician expressed his excitement and confidence in his team’s preparations, while acknowledging the quality of the opposition.

Da Cruz described the Soweto Derby as one of the most important football occasions in South Africa, highlighting the significance of the fixture to supporters and the country’s football community.

He also praised Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou for the work he has done since arriving at the Buccaneers, but insisted that his team is ready for the challenge.

Chiefs will enter the encounter with renewed confidence following an impressive 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout last 16. The result was particularly important for Da Cruz after a difficult period that included their disappointing elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup.

The victory also provided a timely boost to the team’s attacking confidence, with Wandile Duba scoring a hat-trick to help Amakhosi secure their place in the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, the Chiefs coach understands that beating Pirates will require more than confidence. His players will need concentration, discipline and determination throughout the contest.

On the opposite side, Ouaddou’s Pirates will arrive with strong ambitions of maintaining their impressive form and securing another memorable result against their traditional rivals.

The encounter also carries significant importance in the Betway Premiership standings, with an eight-point gap separating the two sides before kick-off.

For Da Cruz, this is an opportunity to make an immediate statement in one of South African football’s biggest fixtures.

A victory would not only strengthen his position at Naturena but also give the Amakhosi supporters a memorable reason to celebrate.
