Nkosinathi Sibisi Shares His Thoughts On Kaizer Chiefs Ahead Of Soweto Derby

We Know Chiefs Have Not Lost, But… Sibisi Sends Strong Message Ahead Of Soweto Derby

Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi has acknowledged Kaizer Chiefs’ impressive unbeaten start to the Betway Premiership season but insists that the Buccaneers must concentrate on their own performance ahead of Saturday’s highly anticipated Soweto Derby.

The two Soweto giants are preparing to renew their historic rivalry at FNB Stadium, with both sides carrying confidence into a fixture that could have a significant impact on their early-season campaigns.

Chiefs have attracted attention for their consistency, having avoided defeat in the league so far. However, Sibisi believes that Pirates cannot afford to become distracted by their opponents’ record. Instead, the focus must remain on executing their own game plan and delivering a strong performance.

Speaking to the media during the derby press conference in Randburg, the Pirates captain recognised the progress made by Amakhosi but remained confident in his team’s ability to secure a positive result.

ā€œI think we need to focus on ourselves. We know what the opponent is capable of. As you’ve said, they have not lost in the league; it speaks volumes of what they have been doing. But we have to focus on what we have to do, and I think if we get that right, we will get the result on Saturday,ā€ Sibisi said.

Chiefs’ unbeaten league record has provided their supporters with renewed optimism, particularly after previous seasons in which the club struggled to maintain consistency.

For Pirates, however, the challenge is to ensure that their preparations are not influenced by the pressure surrounding their rivals’ recent performances.

Sibisi understands that derby matches are different from ordinary league encounters. Form, statistics and previous results can provide useful background, but what happens on the pitch ultimately determines the outcome.

The experienced defender will also be expected to provide leadership in a Pirates squad that includes several young players eager to experience the intensity of the Soweto Derby.

Sibisi has expressed confidence in the younger members of the Buccaneers squad, praising their willingness to listen, learn and respond to guidance.

ā€œI think these boys have showcased glimpses of what they are capable of. As young as they are, I think if you’re good enough, you’re old enough to be on that pitch,ā€ he explained.

He added that the youngsters have delivered whenever they have been called upon, suggesting that the team has enough quality and depth to handle the occasion.

His comments will encourage Pirates supporters who want to see the club’s emerging talents rise to the challenge against their biggest rivals.

The previous league meeting between the sides ended in a 1-1 draw in April, with physical battles forming a major part of the contest.

Sibisi admitted that Pirates have been working to improve their response when matches become physically demanding. He also stressed that the team wants to maintain its footballing identity.
