Kalonzo’s Reaction After Being Heckled at Sifuna’s Event
Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka was forced to abandon his address midway after facing repeated interruptions from supporters of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna during the launch of the Linda Mwananchi Movement secretariat in Nairobi on Friday, October 30.
The incident happened along Jipe Avenue, where several opposition leaders had gathered for the unveiling of Sifuna’s movement secretariat. Kalonzo was among the invited guests expected to address the gathering.
Trouble began when Sifuna invited the former vice president to speak at around midday. Instead of allowing him to deliver his remarks uninterrupted, sections of the crowd repeatedly broke into chants demanding that he publicly declare his support for the Nairobi senator.
The interruptions continued as Kalonzo attempted to address the gathering, forcing him to warn the audience that he would return to his seat if they were unwilling to listen.
At one point, Kalonzo directly challenged the crowd, questioning whether they expected him to support Sifuna without first making efforts to win his backing.
“Do you want me to support Sifuna? If you want me to rally behind him, then you should court me. Don’t you know how to court someone? There is a better way of doing it; we must behave differently,” Kalonzo told the supporters.
Sifuna also intervened during the incident, asking his supporters to calm down and give the invited opposition leader an opportunity to speak.
However, the brief intervention did not end the interruptions. The heckling reportedly resumed, leaving Kalonzo with little opportunity to continue his address.
He eventually stopped speaking and walked back to his seat before completing his remarks, drawing attention to the uncomfortable exchange at an event intended to bring opposition leaders and supporters together.
After Kalonzo’s address was cut short, Sifuna turned to his supporters and urged them to exercise patience and show respect to guests invited to the function.
The Nairobi senator maintained that opposition leaders were working towards cooperation and would eventually agree on a single presidential candidate. He asked supporters not to rush the process or force political decisions before consultations were concluded.
The incident sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans who followed the event online.
Some criticised the supporters for interrupting an invited guest, arguing that political disagreements should not prevent leaders from being heard. Others questioned Kalonzo’s response and the way the exchange unfolded.
The incident has brought renewed attention to the question of how opposition leaders will negotiate political support and presidential ambitions ahead of the 2027 General Election, particularly as supporters begin expressing preferences for potential candidates.
