When El Zakzaky Was Incarcerated, That Was the First Time I Met Tinubu, I Went With His NSA- Gumi

Sheikh Dr Ahmad Gumi has revealed that he first met President Bola Tinubu in 2018 when he sought his intervention over the continued detention of Islamic cleric Ibrahim El Zakzaky.

Gumi made this disclosure during an interview on The PAP Show, where he recalled approaching Tinubu because he believed he was someone he could speak to about the matter in Abuja.

He explained that although he was not a member of the Shiite movement, he felt it was wrong for people to be killed and their leader detained. He said he believed justice required that El Zakzaky be released.

According to Gumi, he met Tinubu alongside his National Security Adviser (NSA) and explained the situation to him. Tinubu reportedly promised to speak with the then president about the matter.

Speaking about the detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Gumi also said Governor Uba Sani had explained to him that he had no involvement in El-Rufai’s incarceration.

He said he believed Uba Sani and expressed hope that a new chapter would begin after the election, creating an opportunity to seek El-Rufai’s release.

Gumi also acknowledged that El-Rufai had made mistakes.

In his words, ‘When El Zakzaky was incarcerated, that was the first time in my life I met Tinubu, in 2018. Because I saw in the government that he was the most sensible person, who I can talk to in Abuja. I went there with his NSA; I spoke to him. I specifically spoke to him about El Zakzaky.”
