Mfundo Vilakazi Reveals Fernando Da Cruz’s Advice on Showboating at Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs attacking midfielder Mfundo Vilakazi has spoken about his development as a footballer under coach Fernando Da Cruz, particularly regarding his approach to showboating and individual skills during matches.

The young midfielder has attracted attention for his technical ability, confidence on the ball and entertaining style of play. However, as he continues to develop at Naturena, there appears to be an increasing emphasis on balancing his natural flair with the overall demands of the team.

Vilakazi explained that his conversations with Da Cruz have helped him understand when certain skills and showboating moves are appropriate during games. The coach’s guidance has encouraged him to become more thoughtful about his decisions on the pitch, especially when individual displays could affect the team’s performance.

Rather than suggesting that he should completely abandon his entertaining style, Vilakazi indicated that the message was about understanding the right moments to express himself. He acknowledged that there are situations where attempting unnecessary tricks might not benefit the team or contribute positively to the outcome of a match.

Explaining his understanding of the coach’s instructions, Vilakazi said: “If it’s not necessary for me to do those things I shouldn’t. But he didn’t say that I shouldn’t ever do it. But even I have told myself that the team comes first.”

His comments suggest that the midfielder is becoming increasingly aware of the importance of discipline, decision-making and teamwork as he gains more experience in professional football.

For a young player whose strengths include creativity and the ability to entertain supporters, learning when to use those qualities can be an important part of his development. While supporters enjoy watching his skills, the ultimate responsibility of an attacking midfielder is to help create opportunities, support teammates and contribute to positive results.

Da Cruz’s approach appears to focus on ensuring that Vilakazi’s individual abilities serve a greater purpose rather than becoming unnecessary distractions during matches.

As Kaizer Chiefs continue their campaign, Vilakazi will be expected to demonstrate that balance by maintaining his creativity while prioritising the club’s objectives. His willingness to embrace constructive guidance could prove important in shaping his future at the Soweto giants.
