Acting Police Minister Says Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi Should Be The Next Hawks Boss

South Africa could be heading towards a major leadership change in its fight against organised crime after Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia recommended Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for appointment as the next head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, popularly known as the Hawks.

The recommendation marks a significant development in the process of selecting the senior police official who would lead one of the country’s most important crime-fighting agencies.

However, Mkhwanazi’s appointment is not yet final. The recommendation must still receive Cabinet approval before it can be formally confirmed.

The proposed appointment comes at a critical time for South Africa’s criminal justice system, as law enforcement agencies face mounting pressure to tackle organised criminal networks, corruption, serious violent crime and complex financial offences.

Should Cabinet approve the recommendation, Mkhwanazi would be entrusted with leading the specialised unit and overseeing its efforts to investigate and bring alleged perpetrators of serious crimes before the courts.

The position requires strong investigative leadership effective coordination with other law enforcement agencies and the ability to ensure that complex investigations are handled professionally and independently.

The recommendation also places renewed attention on the leadership of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the broader efforts to strengthen accountability within the criminal justice system.

Cabinet decision will be closely watched, given the importance of the Hawks in tackling high-profile investigations and pursuing cases involving alleged criminality and corruption.

At this stage however, the recommendation should not be confused with a confirmed appointment. Until Cabinet approval is granted, Mkhwanazi’s proposed elevation to the position remains subject to the outstanding decision.

The government next step will therefore determine whether the recommendation proceeds to a formal appointment, potentially ushering in a new chapter for the country’s specialised crime-fighting unit.
