Ghanaian artistes abroad must work harder to succeed – Teephlow

Ghanaian artists seeking to establish themselves abroad have been encouraged to develop the right mindset, work harder, build strong professional networks and remain committed to their goals while the media is urged to change the narrative surrounding their experiences.

Speaking on the challenges artistes face when pursuing opportunities in foreign countries, Ghanaian musician Teephlow, real name is Lukeman Ekow Baidoo, stressed the importance of focusing on solutions than dwelling on the difficulties.

According to him , “artists must understand the circumstances they face in their new environments and develop the determination to overcome the barriers that may prevent them from achieving their full potential”.

Teephlow, in an interview with DJ Slim in Class morning show, explained that adapting to a new environment requires a shift in mentality.

“When you get to a new environment, you realise you have to work twice as hard to achieve the same level of recognition and impact as others. You need to change your mindset,” he stated.

He expounded that overcoming these challenges begins with individuals taking responsibility for their own progress.

“It starts with you taking responsibility for your own progress while making deliberate efforts to improve your circumstances,” he said.

He also encouraged Ghana’s media to play a key role in changing the narrative about his fellow artistes and called for media support for them.

“The media must change the narrative and support artists who are making conscious efforts to elevate their brands and represent Ghana positively,” he  emphasised.

“Media personalities have a responsibility to give deserving artists opportunities to tell their stories, showcase their work and inspire others who aspire to succeed abroad,” he added.

He further highlighted the importance of building reliable networks, particularly for people planning to relocate or establish themselves in foreign countries.

“If you are planning to relocate or establish yourself abroad, you need to have at least one or two trusted contacts in that country. Settling into a new environment can be challenging even for talented and hardworking individuals,” he said.

He cautioned that “people should not assume that talent alone will guarantee success. You need proper planning, strong relationships and a willingness to learn from experience”.

On the subject of music production, Teephlow shared insights into the learning process involved in mixing and mastering, explaining that developing a clear understanding of sound quality takes time, patience and consistent practice.

“I learned a lot through YouTube tutorials and by studying different production techniques, and that contributed to a better understanding of the principles of mixing and mastering.”

“It took me several years to develop a clearer understanding of what constitutes a good mix. Sometimes simplicity is what gives you quality sound,” he revealed.

He acknowledged that “music production is a continuous learning journey. The pursuit of quality requires dedication, experimentation and a willingness to improve”.
