CAF Confirms 16 Teams as Pirates Qualify for Group Stages

Orlando Pirates Learn Their Pot as CAF Champions League Group Stage Draw Approaches

Orlando Pirates are preparing for another major challenge on the African continent after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed the 16 teams that have qualified for the 2026/27 CAF Champions League group stages.

The Buccaneers will represent South Africa as the country’s only club in this season’s group stage, keeping their hopes of lifting Africa’s most prestigious club trophy alive. Their qualification marks an important achievement for the Soweto giants, who will now turn their attention to the group stage draw scheduled for October 28, 2026, in Cairo, Egypt.

Pirates have been placed in Pot 3 for the draw, meaning they could be grouped with teams from Pots 1, 2 and 4. The identity of their opponents will play a significant role in determining the difficulty of their campaign as they attempt to progress to the knockout stages.

The group stage is expected to present a stern test for the Buccaneers, with several of Africa’s strongest clubs competing for continental glory. Every match will be important, and the Soweto giants will need consistency, tactical discipline and clinical finishing to remain competitive against their opponents.

The qualification has also generated excitement among Orlando Pirates supporters, who are hopeful that their team can make a deep run in the competition. Many fans believe the squad has the quality and experience required to challenge some of the continent’s biggest clubs.

Supporters have also emphasised the importance of trusting the team’s abilities rather than relying on encouragement from rival fan bases. Their confidence reflects the high expectations surrounding the club as it prepares for the next stage of the tournament.

Winning the CAF Champions League would represent a significant achievement for Pirates and further strengthen their reputation in African football.

With the group stage draw approaching, the Buccaneers will soon discover the challenges awaiting them. Their immediate objective will be to navigate the group successfully and move closer to their ambition of conquering Africa.
