Five Suspects Aged 15 to 21 Arrested After E-Hailing Driver Is Robbed at Gunpoint in Eldorado Park
Five suspects aged between 15 and 21 have been arrested following an alleged armed robbery targeting a 20-year-old e-hailing driver in Eldorado Park Extension 7, south of Johannesburg.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, at approximately 11:00 on Maine Street, where the driver was operating a white Toyota Etios after receiving a ride request.
According to the reported details of the incident, a female suspect entered the vehicle through the front passenger door and instructed the driver to wait for her brothers. Two male suspects subsequently joined them, turning what appeared to be a routine trip into an alleged robbery.
One of the suspects allegedly pulled the vehicleβs handbrake, preventing the driver from continuing his journey. The group then reportedly robbed him of an undisclosed amount of cash, his driverβs licence, identity document and bank cards.
The situation escalated when a fourth suspect, who was standing outside the vehicle, allegedly fired a gunshot and demanded that the driver hand over his cellphone.
Despite the threat, the suspects reportedly fled without taking the cellphone, leaving the young driver without his other personal belongings.
Following the incident, Eldorado Park Crime Intelligence worked alongside detectives and Visible Policing (VISPOL) members to investigate the robbery and track down those allegedly involved.
The investigation led to the arrest of five suspects aged between 15 and 21 after police received operational information.
The arrests are expected to form part of the ongoing efforts to address robberies targeting e-hailing drivers, who can face heightened risks when collecting unfamiliar passengers or responding to ride requests.
All five suspects are expected to appear in court soon on charges relating to armed robbery and firearm offences.
The suspects remain accused persons, and their guilt will have to be established through the legal process. Further details regarding their court appearances and the recovery of the stolen belongings have not yet been provided.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers e-hailing drivers may encounter while carrying out their daily work, particularly when a seemingly ordinary passenger request turns into a violent confrontation.
