Protests Loom Across the Country Hours After Ruto Flies Out as Gachagua Reveals This — Details
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has threatened to mobilise 10,000 Kenyans to occupy the offices of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) if the electoral body fails to address concerns about voter registration in border counties.
Speaking during a television interview on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader said the commission must explain how many people have been registered as voters in Wajir, Mandera and other border areas ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua claimed that Kenyans deserved clear answers about the registration process and warned that the opposition could organise demonstrations if the commission failed to provide the information.
“We will mobilise 10,000 people to go to IEBC and demand that these processes are well explained,” he said, according to Nairobi Leo.
The former deputy president also threatened to extend the planned protests to IEBC constituency offices across the country until the commission’s chairperson, Erastus Edung Ethekon, and other commissioners addressed the concerns.
Gachagua further questioned the preparations for the planned audit of the voter register. He asked whether the commission had hired a firm to conduct the exercise, which he said should be completed by February 2027.
The remarks come as political leaders intensify their scrutiny of electoral preparations ahead of the next general election, scheduled for August 2027.
The IEBC has previously rejected allegations of illegal voter registration, saying claims of electoral malpractice must be supported by credible evidence. The commission has also clarified that its role is to register eligible Kenyan citizens who hold valid identification documents.
The controversy over border registration has drawn attention to the need for accurate voter records and public confidence in the electoral process.
Gachagua’s latest remarks place additional pressure on the commission to explain its registration procedures and preparations for the voter register audit.
However, the proposed demonstrations remain a threat announced by the DCP leader, and there is no confirmation that the planned mobilisation has taken place.
With the 2027 elections approaching, Kenyans will be watching how the IEBC responds to the questions raised by political leaders.
Will the commission provide the answers Gachagua is demanding before the planned voter register audit is completed?
