2 People Rescued Alive After Spending 7 Days Trapped Inside Collapsed Eastleigh Building

Rescue teams have pulled two people alive from the rubble of a collapsed building in Eastleigh, Nairobi, as the search for missing victims enters its seventh day.

The breakthrough came as emergency responders continued clearing debris from the 13-storey building that collapsed along 9th Street on October 23, 2026. By Thursday, October 29, rescuers had cleared approximately 80 per cent of the rubble and were working towards reaching the basement, where more victims could still be trapped.

National Disaster Management Unit Director Duncan Ochieng said the teams were hopeful of reaching the bottom of the structure by Thursday evening, during the night or by Friday morning.

Ochieng maintained that rescuers had not abandoned hope of finding additional survivors, although their chances of survival would depend on their physical condition and the injuries they sustained during the collapse.

The two survivors were rescued earlier in the operation and rushed to hospital for treatment. Their rescue has offered renewed hope to families who have spent days waiting for news about their missing relatives.

Approximately 16 people remained unaccounted for in the latest update, with relatives continuing to gather near the disaster scene as emergency teams work around the clock.

The operation brings together officers from the National Disaster Management Unit, Nairobi County Government, Kenya Red Cross, National Youth Service, police and the military.

A specialised rescue vehicle has also been deployed to support efforts to remove debris and reach areas where victims could be trapped.

Rescuers are proceeding cautiously as they navigate the remaining rubble, particularly as they approach the basement in hopes of locating those still missing.

Meanwhile, questions are mounting over accountability following the collapse. By Thursday, there had been no public announcement from the relevant government agencies regarding possible action against the building’s owners.

No arrests or prosecutions linked to the collapse had been reported, leaving affected families and residents awaiting answers even as rescue efforts continued.

The immediate priority remains locating the missing people and determining whether more survivors can be pulled from the wreckage.
