Patience, not panic – What Bobby Motaung really thinks about Fernando Da Cruz & Kaizer Chiefs’ start
Kaizer Chiefs manager Bobby Motaung has thrown his full weight under coach Fernando Da Cruz, urging supporters to exercise patience and trust the long-term vision despite a run of inconsistent results. Appointed at the start of the season, Da Cruz replaced the co-coaching pair of Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef — who guided Chiefs to the CAF Confederation Cup group stage and a top-three league finish — and has faced early scrutiny.
The club currently sits fifth in the Betway Premiership with 14 points from eight matches, nine behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns despite playing one fewer game. Five draws in their last six league outings have slowed momentum, while early exits in the MTN8 and CAF Confederation Cup have added to the pressure. Yet Motaung remains convinced.
“I’m happy,” he told Marawa Sports Worldwide. “My coach owns and controls the dressing room. We’re not running a circus — this is a long-term plan we agreed on together.”
He pointed to Da Cruz’s faith in young talent as proof of progress, highlighting the emergence of 22-year-old Wandile Duba and Mfundo Vilakazi. “Look at the technical structure, the preparation — it’s high-level. Success doesn’t happen overnight. We also have injuries to factor in. Give it time.”
For now, the hierarchy stands firm: Da Cruz has the backing, and the club is building for the future — even if results are taking longer to follow.
