Mr Eazi Reveals Why He Chose Music Over Chelsea FC Move

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Mr Eazi has claimed that Chelsea FC wanted to sign him before the English club secured the services of former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel in 2006.

The singer, whose real name is Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade, made the revelation during an interview on The Beat FM on Wednesday, saying both he and Mikel were linked to a possible move to the London club at the time.

According to Mr Eazi, he chose to pursue music, believing Mikel was better suited to football while he had greater potential in the music industry.

He explained that his decision reflects his philosophy of stepping aside to allow others to shine while focusing on his personal ambitions.

The singer also referenced fellow Nigerian musician Seyi Vibez, whom he jokingly described as a great philosopher for popularising the phrase, “Let your brother shine.”

Mikel joined Chelsea in 2006 and spent 11 years at the club, winning two Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the UEFA Champions League in 2012. He retired from professional football in 2022.

Meanwhile, Mr Eazi has established himself as one of Africa’s prominent music exports, combining his music career with business ventures and contributing to the global growth of Afrobeats.
