Popular ODM MP Urges IEBC to Hold 2027 Polls in January, Says Ruto Deserves More Time
Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma has called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to reschedule the next general elections.
In a statement shared by TV 47 Kenya, the lawmaker requested that the 2027 polls be moved from the traditional August timeline to January 10.
Kaluma argued that the current Constitution does not strictly prescribe a five year term for the president and members of Parliament.
He based his unusual request on this constitutional interpretation suggesting that an earlier election date is legally permissible.
The legislator stated that moving the polls to January would allow the electorate to formally re elect President William Ruto.
He explained that granting the president another chance in office will enable the administration to continue pushing Kenya toward greater developmental milestones.
The statement is likely to spark significant debate among legal experts and political analysts regarding the interpretation of term limits.
The call for an early election comes amid ongoing national discussions about the electoral calendar and the performance of the current government.
The electoral body has yet to respond to the legislator’s proposal regarding the scheduling of the upcoming national exercise.
