Moses Kuria Mocks Gachagua for Questioning Bayern Munich vs Ajax Match at Raila Odinga Stadium

Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has taken a sarcastic swipe at Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua after he questioned the decision to open the Raila Odinga International Stadium with a match between Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam.

In a post on his X account on Thursday, October 29, Kuria offered an ironic apology on behalf of his community, making humorous references to Kenyan athletics legends Catherine Ndereba and Douglas Wakiihuri.

Kuria sarcastically suggested that Gachagua opposes the match because he had received misleading reports that the two athletics legends from the Mt Kenya region would feature in the match without first seeking his approval as their ‘tribal chief’.

“On behalf of my community I want to apologise for the remarks made by our Kingpin protesting the Ajax vs Bayern Munich match,” Kuria wrote.

The ex-CS added that the opposition was based on erroneous reports claiming Ndereba would play for Ajax while Wakiihuri would be in Bayern Munich’s starting line-up.

Kuria ended his post by saying the matter had been clarified and expressing regret over any inconvenience caused, maintaining the sarcastic tone of his response to Gachagua’s criticism.

Kuria’s remarks came a day after Gachagua criticised the plan to have the two European clubs play the inaugural match at the newly constructed stadium in Nairobi.

President William Ruto announced on Wednesday, October 28, that Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam would meet on January 5, 2027, to officially open the 60,000-seater facility, previously known as Talanta Stadium.

Speaking during an interview on KTN, Gachagua questioned why a stadium funded by Kenyan taxpayers would be inaugurated with a match involving foreign teams instead of local clubs.

The former Deputy President argued that Kenyan football teams deserved an opportunity to participate in the historic opening of the facility.

The DCP leader also questioned the reported cost of the stadium, citing the KSh145 billion figure while challenging the decision to feature foreign clubs in the inaugural match.
